Tile installation · Langhorne, PA
Langhorne sits in the heart of lower Bucks County, a community of well-established neighborhoods, mid-century ranches, split levels and colonial homes across the borough, Langhorne Manor and surrounding Middletown Township. Much of the tile in these homes dates from the postwar decades and has not been touched since. At Atlas Design & Build, we work as a tile contractor in Langhorne on standalone projects, without requiring a full renovation.
Not every tile job needs a demolition crew or a new floor plan. If your bathroom needs a new shower surround, your kitchen needs a backsplash or your entryway needs a floor that holds up to daily traffic, we take that on as a standalone project. We handle the substrate prep, waterproofing and layout with the same care we bring to a full remodel, scaled to the size of the job.
Our scope
Langhorne area tile projects often start with a 1950s bathroom or a slab floor. These are the areas we focus on here.
Taking out mortar-bed wall tile and metal lath cleanly, then rebuilding the walls with a modern waterproof backer.
Crack isolation membranes and setting systems suited to concrete slabs, including slabs with radiant heat.
Tile sizes, patterns and niches chosen to make small postwar bathrooms feel larger and easier to clean.
Durable porcelain floors in kitchens and entries, installed flat and true over the existing slab.
We also tile kitchen backsplashes, bathroom floors, fireplace surrounds and laundry rooms, with waterproofing included in every wet area. See our full tile installation services.
Local knowledge
Many homes with a Langhorne mailing address date from Middletown Township's building boom in the 1950s. Bathrooms from that era were often tiled the old way, with wall tile set in a thick mortar bed over metal lath. That tile is remarkably durable, which is why so much of it survives in pink, green, blue and yellow, but removing it is heavy work that takes the wall down to the studs.
Many of these homes also sit on concrete slabs, some with radiant heating in the slab. Tile is an excellent finish over a heated slab, but slab cracks will telegraph through new tile unless a crack isolation membrane goes down first. We map existing cracks and plan the membrane accordingly.
In Langhorne Borough's older homes, the challenges shift to settled wood floors and plaster walls. We level and stiffen the floor where needed so new tile stays sound for the long term.
Our approach
Postwar Langhorne homes are solid, but they were built with methods that shape every tile decision. We plan removal, substrate and membrane choices around how the house was actually built.
Standalone tile projects get the same care as a full remodel, with a written scope, a clear schedule and one point of contact.

Questions
If the tile is intact and you like it, it can be kept and refreshed with new grout and fixtures. If you want a different look, removal is the right call, but plan for the wall to come down to the studs, since that era's tile is usually set in a mortar bed over metal lath.
Yes, with the right preparation. We install a crack isolation membrane that lets the slab move slightly without cracking the tile. Larger or uneven cracks are evaluated and repaired first.
Yes. Tile is one of the best finishes over radiant heat because it conducts warmth well. We take care not to damage the heating lines during removal and preparation.
